The band Guitar Wolf (ギターウルフ), founded in Nagasaki, Japan in 1987, are known for their piercing vocals and extremely loud style of garage punk that emphasized heavy distortion. They coined the phrase “Jett Rock ‘n’ Roll”, a homage to rocker Joan Jett, which they also use to describe their musical style – an energetic cross between The Ramones, rockabilly, classic punk, and noise rock. The band star in cult classic zombie flick Wild Zero.

The EPs and the albums by Beirut are largely the work of Zach Condon, a young Santa Fe, New Mexico native.

Condon has recorded before: when he was fifteen and under the name of Realpeople, he made an electronic record, fashioned after his love for The Magnetic Fields. Condon was a straight-A student until he dropped out at the age of 16 to travel Europe in a drunken haze, cavorting and partying with the locals wherever he ended up. It was during one of these evenings that he was first exposed to Balkan music (notably including the Boban Marković Orkestar and Goran Bregović), blasting from the upstairs apartment. Condon ended up with the Serbian artists all night, going through albums country by country, note for note.

The first album under the Beirut moniker, Gulag Orkestar (2006), was the direct result of what he learned that night. While it may sound like an entire Balkan orchestra playing modern songs as mournful ballads and upbeat marches, the album was performed and recorded almost entirely by Condon alone. He did so on Pro Tools while skipping school in Albuquerque and at Sea Side Studios in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Jeremy Barnes added percussion and some violin overlays.

After recording, Condon formed a full band which at times varies in the number of members, from six to ten. Live he is accompanied by Perrin Cloutier (cello/accordion), Jason Poranski (guitar/mandolin/ukulele), Nick Petree (drums), Kristin Ferebee (violin), Paul Collins (organ/keys/tambourine/ukulele), Jon Natchez (baritone sax/mandolin/glockenspiel), and Kelly Pratt (trumpet/euphonium).

In November 2006 Condon was “briefly hospitalized for extreme exhaustion”, the band’s website said, and as a consequence the band cancelled the rest of the tour. They resumed performing in March 2007 and released their second album, The Flying Club Cup the same year on October 9th. Parts of the album were performed and recorded by Condon in his bedroom again, but others were recorded with the live band, which resulted in a more organic, live sound. While writing, Condon said he was inspired by French music, like Jacques Brel (whose song Le Moribond he covered on his Elephant Gun EP), and he moved to Paris for a while. During the extensive tour in support of The Flying Club Cup, Condon and the band more or less fell apart from exhaustion once again and disappeared from the radar in April 2008.

Condon took a long break and returned in 2009 with a double EP, March of the Zapotec & Realpeople: Holland. The first was partly recorded in Mexico with the Mexican Band Jimenez and had a more South-American flavour to it than Condon’s previous efforts. The second EP ‘Holland’ was credited to Condon’s old name Realpeople and consisted of five electrotracks, once more in the vein of The Magnetic Fields.

What do Givers give? It is an often overlooked, yet all too important question concerning these starry-eyed melody-mystic rebels. They take hearts, this much is known. I stare intently between songs, through lasers, feathers, sweat, confetti, paint, at these friends who i must now call people as they are at once also strangers in the throes of the prismauditory hallucination that is their music. The colors, tones, shapes, and threads, up-beat, weaving, psych-folk, meshing, afro-delic, beckoning my mind out into the open, much as a dream catcher above one’s bed. Then it hits me: Givers give dreams. Seeing them perform is to be overloaded with blissful information. More than one’s mind could ever hope to descramble and classify within any 24 hour period. Their music is not only music; it is motivation, inspiration, and a celebration of the world around us. To experience it is to be changed forever, for the better; to know that you yourself have more to Give.

“It’s a record about moving forward,” says Peter Silberman. “Hospice was kind of all-encompassing for a while and Burst Apart feels like us moving on from it. Not to abandon it, but to keep it in its place and figure out what’s next.”

Recording began in September 2010 and then continued over a five-month span at the Brooklyn-based band’s studio in Bushwick. Rather than bring in an outside collaborator, singer/guitarist Peter Silberman, drummer Michael Lerner, and keyboardist/multi-instrumentalist Darby Cicci decided to pool their considerable skills and produce the record entirely on their own.

“We realized that we didn’t need an outside producer or engineer to sound the way we wanted — we could produce and engineer it ourselves”,” says Cicci. “We took a five-year lease on a studio and pretty much treated it like a job for five months. We went to the studio in the morning and worked every day for 8 or 12 hours, just piecing it together.”

Two years spent touring behind Hospice had left its mark on The Antlers. In addition to bonding the trio as friends and colleagues, all three had developed an increased interest in electronic music, what Silberman refers to as “music that keeps moving and is kind of entrancing and expansive at the same time. Headphone music, music that keeps you going while you’re driving for 20 hours.” The band’s goal was to draw upon those sounds while still employing classic songwriting structures, synthesizing ostensibly artificial qualities into an organic pop template to evoke a full panoply of feeling.

“A lot of electronic music prides itself on its anti-human quality,” says Cicci, “where it chooses to pull emotion out rather than add emotion in. In that way, this record is definitely way far from being an electronic record.”

To that end, The Antlers avoided excessive programming, instead endeavoring to capture the symbiotic sound of a band that simply happens to employ synthesizers and other electronic instrumentation. more

The Blackberry Winter Band, the collective of musicians responsible for the Winter’s Bone movie soundtrack, are taking film’s haunted take on American and Appalachian music on tour and they’re playing here at The Loft on June 11th.

The band, consisting of vocalist Marideth Sisco alongside heavyweights of the American roots music scene like Western swing guitarist Dennis Crider and bluegrass multi-instrumentalist Bo Brown. Since the release of the soundtrack and the surprising success of the film, Winter’s Bone’s music has been seen by some critics as a lower-profile, dark-side version of the highly successful O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack, which featured a more widely recognizable list of performers, including Alison Krauss and Ralph Stanley, and spawned a tour of its own, playing amphitheaters across the United States.

When Rubber Gloves opened in Denton in 1997, Kris booked and managed the venue; building a reputation amongst national booking agents of success and trustworthiness which has developed over the years into friendships and concrete working relationships. Granada Theater hired Kris in 2006 to attract a younger audience to the venue. His vision transformed the booking calendar and brought much deserved attention Granada Theater, which is arguably Dallas’ best live music venue. In 2010 Gilley’s Dallas offered Kris the position of Director of Entertainment; with the mission of rebranding the facility as a multi-venue entertainment destination and booking all genres of music. Over the course of a single year, Youmans and his team completely changed the image of the facility from traditional Texas honky-tonk to diverse entertainment complex. The complex’s 1,500 capacity room was renamed to South Side Music Hall last fall and has since hosted about a dozen national touring acts; including rare appearances by acts like Guided By Voices and Beirut.

If you enjoy live music and you live in Dallas, there is a very strong possibility you’ve been to one of Youmans’ shows. Agents prefer to work with Kris Youmans because they know that he (and his team) will put the extra effort into promoting shows that is required to make them successful. Which is why this Spring Kris began working on the beginnings of his own independent production company named Tactics Productions. Kris’ vision is to attract more touring acts to North Dallas by creating more successful shows and placing them in the most appropriate local venues. Over the years Kris Youmans has established friendships with the owners of many of Dallas’ live music venues and small clubs; as well as the handful of booking agents that bring shows to North Texas. Tactics Productions will bring together a lifetime worth of friends and partners to bear on the mission of growing the music scene in Dallas, TX.

Music fans in Dallas have attended and loved Youmans’ shows for years, at Rubber Gloves, Granada or The Loft and South Side Music Hall whether they know of the man behind the music or not. Tactics Productions is merely the new brand on a concept Kris Youmans has been working on for most of his life; promoting North Dallas’ developing music scene and encouraging people to experience live music. Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers is a rock band from Tempe, Arizona, USA. The band is typically referred to by fans by the abbreviation “RCPM”. The Peacemakers’ music is known to cross genres, with some songs showing a more Country influence, and others sounding more like a modern pop song.

Roger Clyne’s lyrics frequently showcase his Southwestern roots, and frequently imply images of cowboys, Federales, and references to Mexico and places in Arizona, amongst other Southwestern references.

After the demise of The Refreshments, a semi-successful rock band of the 1990s whose top radio hit was “Banditos,” former frontman Roger Clyne and drummer P.H. Naffah formed a new band that would be called Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers.

The two were joined by former Gin Blossom, Scott Johnson; Steve Larson, former guitarist for another Tempe band, Dead Hot Workshop; and bass player Danny White. They released their first album, Honky Tonk Union in 1999.Honky Tonk Union was released in limited quantities with a bonus live CD, Real to Reel. The next year, they released an extended version of Real to Reel as a stand-alone album.

The musical feel of Honky Tonk Union was a noticeable change from Clyne’s previous works with The Refreshments. Whereas The Refreshments had a prominent lead guitar and edgy southwestern rock feel, Honky Tonk Union displayed a heavier country influence along with focusing more on the singer-songwriter aspect of the band.

Kurt Vile has a way of tying time in knots. You can hear it on his new album Smoke Ring For My Halo from the get-go – the pinwheeling guitars and reaching atmospheres of ‘Baby’s Arms’ are as strange as they are familiar: a demonstration of how Kurt can put worn methods and sounds through himself and end up with something that isn’t emotionally or sonically obvious. Instead we’re left with a record that contains traces of the past but doesn’t waste precious time in the now being reverent.

Once compared to Leonard Cohen, Tom Petty, Psychic TV, and Animal Collective in the same review (for 2009’s Childish Prodigy), Kurt can bring to mind anything from Suicide to Leo Kottke to My Bloody Valentine, Bob Seger, Nick Drake, and Eastern ragas. Still, he pieces together these disparate elements so seamlessly and unpretentiously that such reference points are rendered pointless by the singularity of his sound. Lineup changes alone can derail even the strongest band — never mind record label difficulties and personal problems. But Lawrence, Kansas‘ Appleseed Cast emerged from all of the above tougher for the experience. After six years together and four full-length albums, including 2001‘s breakthrough double album, Low Level Owl, the band underwent internal problems, and their label for 2003‘s Two Conversations, the much-missed Tigerstyle Records, folded.

Instead of calling it quits, the Appleseed Cast took a much-needed hiatus. Drummer Josh Baruth left the band, and Nathan Richardson came on board. Then the foursome, including Chris Crisci (vocals/guitar), Aaron Pillar (guitar), and Marc Young (bass), began working on their fifth full-length, Peregrine, an album that combines the emotional, aggressive sound of their earliest releases with the dynamic and experimental work that characterized their later albums.

Peregrine bears the scars of Appleseed Cast‘s past. Whatever personal or band problems the group endured, they‘re exorcized them on this album‘s contemplative instrumentals, beginning with the echoing opener, “Celebration,” which climbs and dives over its four minutes. Peregrine is a female name associated with restless wandering, and it‘s also the name of the daughter in the album‘s recurring storyline. Here Peregrine is a ghost, a daughter, a reminder of secrets waiting to be dug up. Woven around Peregrine‘s 13 tracks is a horror story of violence and familial guilt, which Crisci makes all the more easy to imagine with his plaintive voice. It would be a bit scary if the songs weren‘t so lush and pretty.

Hiatus now over, the Appleseed Cast can celebrate ten years together this tour — if only nature would let them. “For the second time in a week we were stuck in a snow storm and had to cancel the show,” they wrote on their website last week. But we think they‘ll pull through.

The Dear Hunter is the full-time progressive rock project of Casey Crescenzo, formerly of post-hardcore band The Receiving End of Sirens. The band got its name from the lead character of the story that he wrote to go along with the music. The sound is unlike that of Casey’s former band, with musical roots deep-set in the progressive rock genre and utilizing a wider variety of instrumentation.

Glad tidings freakers!

Mister Heavenly is… a band, a threesome as charming and, sometimes, as tricky to pin down as their moniker suggests. They sing a theme song in which one voice pledges undying devotion, and another cheerfully asserts that he’ll never be Mister Heavenly. Don’t think of it as a conflict; it’s more of a yin-yang thing. Mister Heavenly finds harmony in unexpected places.

Mister Heavenly is… comprised of indie rock veterans Nick Thorburn (Islands/The Unicorns), Ryan Kattner (Man Man), and Joe Plummer (Modest Mouse). Their mutual admiration society was in place before Mister Heavenly took shape. Modest Mouse and Man Man toured together repeatedly, starting in 2007. Nick and Ryan met in Philadelphia in the final days of The Unicorns, or maybe the early days of Islands. They’re not sure, but they hit it off instantly. Active Child is the project of Pat Grossi, resident of Los Angeles, native of New Jersey. Inspired by his days as a choir boy and epic nights as a member of the band Weight Room, Grossi combines his soaring vocals and crunching analogue synths with the honey drip drop of echoing harps.

The influence of chorale singing, along with the sensibility of non-secular music, is as apparent in Active Child’s work as the influence of synth pop bands like New Order, Joy Division and Tears for Fears. His debut collection of songs features the skilled use of various 80s-tinged synths to create ethereal, soaring soundscapes, punctuated by crisp electronic drum samples and handclaps. All of this lays the groundwork for Grossi’s exquisite vocals, which, with their unearthly sound and evocative lyrics, take on an enchanting, hymnal quality that would not be out of place amongst the richly colored sunlight of a church’s stained-glass interior.

Active Child’s songs are an intriguing study in contrast. The organic elements of Grossi’s angelic vocals and the occasional delicate strumming of a harp cast light on the eerie darkness created by the haunting synths and cavernous reverberating of percussion.
Grossi cites the musical environment in his childhood home as an early inspiration for his own desire to make music. After participating in a school choir as a child, he joined the Philadelphia Boys Choir at age 10. Find him on Twitter @Activechild

The drums hit you in the chest first, spraying your speakers like swift gunshots. But then Meric Long’s finger-picked chords kick in, cascading across Logan Kroeber’s brass knuckle beats like only the best Dodos songs can.

This forward motion feeling has driven the duo since 2005, but several key changes lift their fourth LP (No Color) to another level. For one thing, the band reunited with Portland producer John Askew, the man behind the boards of the Dodos‘ first two full-lengths, Beware of the Maniacs and Visiter. Having an old friend around was like adding an honorary third member; a voice of reason who can isn’t afraid of vetoing ill-fated ideas. Ideas like glossy layers of vibraphone that lost their luster halfway through.

The main focus of No Color was to bottle the frenzied folk approach that’s been there since the beginning. And it works damn well, from the dagger-drawing dynamics and brain-burrowing choruses of “Black Night” to the hairpin turns and splashy percussion of “Good.” And then there are the songs that’ll make you want to dub old episodes of 120 Minutes, including the instrumental break of “Don’t Stop” and the sneak attack solo that weaves its way around the steely rhythms of “Don’t Try and Hide It.”

“I have a love for ’90s riffs that I haven’t gotten to showcase in this band,” says Long. “The most fun I had with this record was when I got to strap on the electric guitar and come up with Billy Corgan riffs while the tape was rolling.”
It’s as if Long’s finally got to live the flannel-era fantasies that started when he was a teenager, tearing guitar tabs out of magazines at a local pharmacy. The catch? There’s less room for error than there’s ever been.

“We’re more naked this way,” explains Long. “You can hide a lot of your mistakes on an acoustic, but with an electric, every single note is much louder and more piercing. So I have to be way more on top of my playing now.”

And so do we.

Late last fall Tim Kasher went north for the winter after nearly a year of touring in support of Cursive’s 2009 release Mama, I’m Swollen. Leaving sunny Los Angeles, it was in the frosty valley of Whitefish, MT – nestled next to Big Mountain and Glacier National Park – that he set about writing and recording his debut solo album, The Game Of Monogamy.

The album’s classical opening and its closing begin with an uneasy refrain of plucked notes on a harp, setting the tone for The Game Of Monogamy. The theatrical arrangements and lush instrumentation of the album’s moody orchestral pop evoke a 1950s, pre-sexual revolution atmosphere, and set the stage for a dilemma that remains thoroughly modern. The protagonist’s arc in The Game of Monogamy spans the wide range of distinctly human emotions tangled up around relationships in a starched shirt society. Call it the score for our collective sexual plight: expression routinely becomes repression in the name of romance. Kasher’s vision is as keen as ever, unapologetically honest, unflinching, and self-reflective.

Cold War Kids are an indie rock band from Fullerton, California, USA. Band members are Nathan Willett (lead vocals, piano, guitar), Jonnie Russell (guitar, vocals, percussion), Matt Maust (bass guitar) and Matt Aveiro (drums). According to Songfacts, Matt Maust came up with the band’s name. He was inspired by a trip to Eastern Europe where he came across a big park where they’d dumped statues that had been removed after Communism fell. Polar Bear Club is an indie rock/hardcore band from Rochester and Syracuse, New York. A demo released in 2005 brought them much attention, and was a precursor to their first EP, The Redder, the Better, released in Summer 2006 on Triple Attack and Luchador Records. The EP contained catchy, pop-punk songs with lots of of opportunities for energetic sing-a-longs, and was found to be a fan and zine favorite throughout the year.

The Aggrolites are more than a band they are a movement unto themselves. They carry a banner – one created with their own hands. This banner reads, “Dirty Reggae,” and represents their signature fusion of reggae, soul, grit and determination. For seven magnificent years, this dirty reggae bunch has rolled from city to city, across the pond and up main street USA. They rally the kids, the parents, the students, the cops, the bosses and the drifters. The people come, they relish in The Aggrolites, the dirty reggae and the joy that comes with it all. Peelander-Z is a “Japanese super-action comic band. ” They seem to make fun of a Japanese style of music known as Visual Kei which consists of bands that are mainly men that mainly dress up as girls and 80’s hair bands. Visual Kei bands also make up stories such as being from the future. So Peelander-Z claims to be from planet Peelander section Z, and they claim that their costumes are actually their skin. Peelander’s live shows are really the band’s biggest draw. The band dresses in different costumes. Peelander Yellow has dressed as a banana and a yellow M&M, Peelander Red Usually wears an Indian headdress and a long robe with dragon wings on the back, and Peelander Blue wears boas and a championship wrestling belt.

Honeyhoney is the jazzy, twangy, rollicking collaboration between vocalist Suzanne Santo and guitarist Ben Jaffe. Prior to joining the duo, Jaffe recorded music for TV and film; he then met Santo (an actress whose resume included stints on Law & Order and Blind Justice) through a mutual friend, who took Jaffe to see one of Santo’s solo gigs. The two began holding informal songwriting sessions and soon discovered a musical partnership. Adopting the name honeyhoney, they also discovered an early supporter in Kiefer Sutherland, who signed the band to Ironworks Music, a label he co-owns with musician Jude Cole. Honeyhoney made their studio debut by issuing the Loose Boots EP in early 2008; the musicians then hit the road with Lifehouse (another band on the Ironworks roster) while finding time to work on their debut album. Rocky Votolato is an American musician. He was born in rural Texas in 1978, though was raised in the Pacific Northwest. When his former band Lying on Loot disbanded in 1996, Rocky Votolato, along with friends Rudy Gajadhar (drums) and Andrew Hartley (bass), started playing under the name Waxwing. Rocky’s younger brother Cody (The Blood Brothers) soon joined the band on second guitar, and the band recorded their debut 7” for Henry’s Finest Recordings. In 1999, Second Nature Recordings released their first full-length, entitled ‘For Madmen Only’. Blending straight-up rock with elements of post-hardcore, and Cody’s metal reminiscent guitaring, Waxwing soon established a strong local following. Frank Turner is a burgeoning artist based in the United Kingdom. He has toured the UK extensively and gone on a few forays into Central and Eastern Europe since the demise of his former band Million Dead.

Songfacts reports that Turner had a privileged upbringing, thanks to his grandfather, the former chairman of high street retailer BHS, Sir Mark Turner. Brought up in a manor house by his city investment banker father, Roger Turner, and mother Jane, the daughter of a bishop, Turner was educated at Eton alongside Prince William.

In Sept. 2010, Lydia announced a farewell tour and a hiatus of indeterminate time. But luckily on May 17, it was announced that Leighton and Craig will bring out the band from hiatus to record a new album this summer under the name Lydia. Leighton explained a little bit more on what brought him to bring Lydia back:

“I was pretty convinced that I was just going to do my own thing and just put it out under my own name. Rooted in the Orange County community of Huntington Beach, California, founding band members Jared Watson and guitarist / vocalist Dustin Bushnell met in 1996 while in high school, embarking on a friendship based on music, as well as their shared passion for surfing, skating and the endless party of the laid-back SoCal lifestyle.

Early on, they spent many late nights jamming in Bushnell’s soundproof garage with a four-track recorder, writing unique acoustic hip-hop songs that featured reggae inflections. Tapes ‘n Tapes are an indie rock band which formed in 2003 at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, United States. The band consists of Josh Grier (vocals, guitar), Eric Appelwick (bass), Matt Kretzman (keyboards) and Jeremy Hanson (drums).

Formed in the winter of 2003 at Carleton College, Tapes ‘n Tapes gained popularity after a series of write-ups on music blogs, first on EAR FARM then on sites such as Music For Robots and Gorilla vs. Bear, leading some to cite them as the most recognizable examples of a “blog band”. However, it wasn’t until The Loon received a favorable review from Pitchfork Media, including a “best new music” commendation, that the band started to find success. Tapes ‘n Tapes have been compared to such alternative bands as Pixies and Pavement, or the recent alt-pop phenomenon Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. After release of their self-titled EP, the band played with more well-known acts such as The Futureheads, The Streets, Metric, Calvin Johnson, and I Am the World Trade Center. The band made its American television debut on The Late Show with David Letterman on July 25, 2006, performing the song “Insistor.” In 2006 the band did a Take-Away Show video session shot by Vincent Moon. They also performed at the Siren Music Festival in July of that same year. Electric Six is a six-piece Detroit-based rock band that plays a mix of rock, funk and disco.

The band’s first notorious formation comprised Dick Valentine (vocals), Rock and Roll Indian (guitar), Surge Joebot (guitar), Disco (bass, former member of Detroit Cobras), and M (drums). Dick Valentine (real name Tyler Spencer) has always been the primary songwriter (both music and lyrics) of Electric Six, currently and under their former incarnation, when they were known as the Wildbunch.

The melodic sighs on her recordings seem to be the only breaths Maria Taylor has the time to take. Though often referred to as half of the duo Azure Ray, Maria’s course was charted well before that – from her childhood home in Birmingham, which her father, a musician, equipped with a studio. Some things a person just knows, and for Maria, being a musician was never really a question.

Azure Ray and Now It’s Overhead aside, Maria’s luminous vocals and multi- instrumentalist talents have seen her name attached to an impressive roster of musicians. She’s popped up on Crooked Fingers’ Bring on the Snakes, Bright Eyes Lifted or the Story is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground, and Moby’s 18. Her distinctive voice can also be found on such releases as The Bruces’ Shining Path (2004), The Faint’s Wet From Birth (2004), and Bright Eyes’ I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning (2005).

This tour is largely in support of Taylor’s fifth solo release, Overlook. Taylor will also be accompanied by a full band.

Bob Log III is an American, Slide Guitar, One Man Band. During performances, he plays old silvertone archtop guitars, wears a full body cannonball man suit, and a helmet wired to a telephone which allows him to devote his hands and feet to guitar and drums. The spectacle has been described as a guitar dance party, full of sweaty smiles, jumps and kicks. Touring over 150 shows a year in more than 30 countries, Log and his guitar never, ever quit. Bob Log’s version of quick Delta blues is a continuation the sound that Bob Log and Thermos pioneered in the duo, Doo Rag. The major differences are: greater emphasis on guitar showmanship, and drumming -one man band style-with his feet. It sounds like three drummers, two guitar players, and one sort of singer. Based in Tucson, Arizona, and Melbourne, Australia, he has made frequent tours of North America, Europe, Japan and Australia, Mexico, and Iceland.

From deep in the heart of Texas, armed with the home-grown mantra “Turn On, Tune In, Drone Out,” The Black Angels ring real and rugged like a crimson full moon-lit night. Formed in May of 2004, the band’s sanctified holy racket was breech-born out of life-long friendships drawn up in blood and sealed with a kiss. Their self proclaimed “Native American Drone ‘N’ Roll” genre has progressed from communal living and the members’ eclectic upbringings. Bassist Ryan was born on a cult compound, guitarist Bland is the real deal son of a Texas preacher man, and drummer Bailey and vocalist Maas believe a little girl in a red linen dress haunts the group’s home.

Taking their name from the classic Velvet Underground tune “The Black Angel’s Death Song,” these Angels are far more than classic revisionists with extensive record collections. This is heavy-duty psychedelic rock with an incessant primitive beat that echoes the spirit of the 13th Floor Elevators and early Stones.

Calling the outskirts of Austin, TX their HQ, these hungry-to-create touring nomads crave taking their love for music out on the road. Their densely-layered songs feature Bland’s acid-infused finger-painting guitar and the melodic incantations of lead singer Mass within guitar/bass labyrinths from Ryan and Kyle Hunt. The music is martial-drummed into apocalyptic bliss by garage-punk goddess Stephanie Bailey.

Hannah Hooper met Christian Zucconi late one evening on the lower east side of Manhattan. They had both been living in New York for years and had never crossed paths before. But from that night forward the two could hardly be pulled apart. Soon after their connection Hooper was invited to an art residency in Greece on the island of Crete and Hooper insists “without any hesitation” she invited Zucconi to join her on this journey. “Seriously, we had only known one another for a few days but are both so inspired and alive when we are together that going to Greece seemed like a magical and natural thing to do” recalls Zucconi.

On Crete, in a small remote mountain village, Hooper and Zucconi met the members of their future band “GROUPLOVE” a year before it was officially formed. Sean Gadd, a natural songwriter and guitar player, born and bred in London instantly bonded with the two eccentric New Yorkers. Their relationship became apparent through the music they were making day in and day out. Andrew Wessen, a pro surfer and musician from Los Angeles and his childhood friend Ryan Rabin, an accomplished drummer and producer, were also at the residency and quickly joined in with the musical trio. These five musicians make up the members of what we now know as GROUPLOVE .

Brooklyn based indie-pop band, The Drums, is the original project of Jonathan Pierce and Jacob Graham. The two met at summer camp as children and formed electro-pop band, Goat Explosion. The two ultimately separated and spent several years working on electronic side projects– Pierce’s Elkland and Graham’s Horse Shoes. While both separately successful, the two wanted to experiment outside of electronic music and ultimately got back together to form the Drums in 2006. There have been changes in members over the years, but Graham and Pierce remain at the core. With the release of the Summertime! EP in 2010, the Drums grew in popularity due to their catchy summery, surf-rock tracks. Their self-titled full length mirrored the EP well, and the group has recently announced their sophomore LP, Portamento.
