For seven years now, Margot and the nuclear so and so’s – led by singer and songwriter Richard Edwards – have been creating music that swirls with fear and doubt and tension and beauty. Their music was born out of Indianapolis with the lushly melancholic The Dust of Retreat (2005), came of age with the bittersweet duo Animal/Not Animal (2008), and most recently arrived with the primal Buzzard (2010).

Edwards saw Buzzard as the beginning of a “panic pop” trilogy: albums filled with a gnarled version of the pop music of his childhood, loosely tied together by the concepts of aging and starting over. For the second installment, he took his notebook full of song fragments and went to the place that held some of his most vivid memories of calm, a mere five months after Buzzard’s release. The focal point of the songs on Yellow Ostrich‘s magnificent debut ‘The Mistress’ is Alex Schaaf‘s tender, pleading voice. It’s a reedy, childlike instrument, and on ‘The Mistress’ it gets looped and layered, stretched, manipulated; it’s stacked up several high and, most often, it’s used as an instrument, fleshing out the empty spaces in his bare, searching songs. Aside from a pulsing bass guitar, it’s the only sound on ‘Hold On’ a kaleidoscope of “ohs” spiraling around Schaaf‘s heartbroken opening: “Now that we’ve started, it’s sad to see it end.”

It’s high noon in Brooklyn but its always midnight on southern, dead end suburban streets. Here, there is total silence except for the house at the very end, where inside a tin roof garage, teenagers are kissing for the first time. The humidity is too great, the boys peel off white t’s and the girls cheeks are flushed, beet red under the garage’s two fluorescent stripes. In a pond behind the house an alligator waits for a snow birds’ Pomeranian to take its night stroll. A child is sleep walking for the first time. Some one is running away for the last time. The music is too loud on the 12 D battery boom box radio, the cops are on their way. It’s at this moment you hear the music of Twin Shadow on a radio station transmitting suburban ghost dreams that sound like a slow motion shot of a cannon, singing about spirits, visions, and aural hallucinations cutting through the first American night.
