While over in America the band also recorded a new 7-track EP for I-tunes, which will be made available exclusively via the platform in the New Year. Featuring their counter-intuitive cover of Smashing Pumpkins’ ‘We Only Come Out At Night’, the EP also includes deconstructed readings of six tracks from their album ‘Reservoir’, among them a rousing Krautrock take on ‘Comets’.
Meanwhile, ‘Reservoir’ itself has been making Best of the Year lists at tastemaker indie record stores the length and breadth of Britain, despite its somewhat unorthodox release pattern; only available by mail order or from fanfarlo.com for most of the year, and even now still self-released and label-less in the UK.
In fact, Fanfarlo’s position of being an unsigned British act signed in the States to a major label (Atlantic) by the same guy who launched The Strokes and Kings Of Leon marks them out as something of a Brit anomaly in a year dominated by female pop.
Post this spring’s SXSW, and an explosion of playlists at the major US NPR (national public radio) stations, the band built a quick and ardent American fanbase, crashing into the summer blogosphere, getting major synch placements in top-rated TV shows ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ‘House‘, and upgrading their New York show from the 200 capacity Mercury Lounge to a sold out show at the 650+ Bowery Ballroom. Next stop is Webster Hall playing to some 1,400 folks just ahead of Christmas. …more
